Job Description

Perform donor suitability, histories and blood collection procedures. Ensures the safety of the donor and safety, purity, and potency of the blood collected. Performs various regulated functions related to the care of the blood after collections, including storage and transportation. Operator and maintaining use of automated collections with Apheresis equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the duties and responsibilities performed within this classification. All employees must perform all assigned duties in compliance with internal SOPs, external regulations, and internal policies, bring compliance issues to the attention of management and assure quality customer service to all customers internal and external. Employees must comply with traffic legislation, be conscious of road safety, demonstrate safe driving, and other good road safety habits while driving their personal vehicle for work purposes.

  • Completes donor registration process
  • Performs mini-physical
  • Performs medical questionnaire
  • Performs blood collection procedures according to SOPs, including Quality Control.
  • Attends to donorโ€™s comfort and safety during and post donation, including those having reactions or complications to the procedure
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information regarding donors
  • Labels all blood collection materials according to SOP
  • Cares for products after collection, providing temporary storage, and transportation to the center when necessary
  • Assists in unloading, assembling, maintain, dismantling and reloading of equipment and supplies (if applicable)
  • Completes all required paperwork
  • Complies with LIFELINE safety policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service when dealing with donors, members of the community and co-workers
  • Specialized training on Apheresis collection equipment
  • Maintains Apheresis equipment
  • Schedules appointments for Apheresis donors

Training

IWELCOME, ILEAD, Annual cGMP, Annual Safety, Annual Human Resources (Sexual Harassment, Workplace Bullying, Diversity/Unconscious Bias), Medical Ethics, Customer Service, Blood Establishment Computer Systems, and all required departmental and interdepartmental training. 8-10-week on-the-job training for phlebotomy. Minimum 2-week training on Apheresis Collection Devices.

CPR (recommended) and First Aid

Qualifications

EDUCATION: High School diploma.

EXPERIENCE: On the Job Training

SKILLS:

  • Language skills must include the ability to read, write, speak English effectively and follow oral and written instructions consistent with policies and procedure, SOPs or other requirements.
  • Documentation accuracy required
  • Ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Effective planning and organizational skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to function as a key team member in a high-level production environment coupled with strong organization skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Must be able to make simple decisions based on well-defined choices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the staff and the public to enhance LIFELINEโ€™s relationship with the community.
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Working Conditions

Functions are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as inclement weather, atmospheric elements and pathogenic substances. Performance of this job could expose the employee to blood-borne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
