Job description

The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) has an opportunity for an Associate General Counsel in our Legal/Compliance Department. This position provides in-house legal services to NAMIC and affiliated entities, acts as a subject matter expert on legal policy matters, and assists in managing active litigation under the direction of the General Counsel.
Essential functions of the position include:
  • At the direction of the General Counsel, provides in-house legal services/advice to the management and staff of NAMIC and its affiliates on designated legal matters.
  • Provides contract drafting, reviewing, and advising for in-house clients and assists in the review and management of institutional risk parameters for partner and vendor relationships.
  • Supports NAMIC's amicus program, driving program growth and member/industry stakeholder engagement on topics of interest before state and federal courts.
  • Coordinates with state and federal advocates and the policy team on legal/tort reform related topics of impact.
  • Supports day-to-day litigation and legal services management of both business related and direct litigation advocacy (with advocacy areas of NAMIC as the internal client); advises advocacy staff on amicus policy issues, including management of outside counsel, strategy, and monitoring litigation budgets.
  • Supports NAMIC's legislative and regulatory compliance resources for NAMIC member companies.
  • Represents NAMIC at relevant insurance industry meetings and engages in public speaking and member educational opportunities where needed.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with management, staff members, and external contacts.
  • Arrives to work on time and maintains a positive attendance record.
  • Performs any other duties and projects assigned.

Qualifications include:
  • Minimum 4 years of legal and/or regulatory compliance experience in the property/casualty insurance industry.
  • Law degree from an ABA-accredited school and an active law license in at least one state.
  • Qualified to practice law in the State of Indiana in fulfilling essential functions.
  • Have earned one or more insurance-related educational certifications such as a CPCU, CCP, AINS or equivalent.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check and must possess an acceptable MVR.
