What are the big 4 internships?

The big 4 internships typically refer to internship programs offered by the four largest professional services firms: Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Ernst & Young (EY), and KPMG. These internships provide opportunities in accounting, consulting, audit, and advisory services, often serving as a pathway to full-time employment within these firms.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a humanitarian internship?

As a humanitarian intern, you'll typically support a variety of projects, such as organizing community outreach events, conducting research on local needs, assisting with program monitoring and evaluation, and helping coordinate logistics for aid distribution. Your daily tasks may include data entry, preparing reports, and collaborating with field teams or local partners. Interns often work closely with experienced professionals, giving you valuable exposure to both office-based and fieldwork in a dynamic, multicultural environment.

A career in humanitarian work typically requires relevant education such as a degree in international relations, social sciences, or related fields, along with practical experience through internships or volunteer work. Developing skills in project management, cross-cultural communication, and language proficiency can enhance employability. Many roles also require adaptability, resilience, and knowledge of humanitarian standards and protocols.

What are humanitarian internships?

Humanitarian internships are temporary positions, usually lasting a few months, where students or recent graduates work with organizations focused on humanitarian aid and development. These internships provide hands-on experience in areas such as disaster relief, human rights, health, and education, often in international or multicultural settings. Interns may support project management, research, communication, or field operations, gaining valuable insight into the challenges and impact of humanitarian work. Such experiences can help interns build professional networks and develop skills relevant for a career in the humanitarian sector.

Humanitarians often find suitable roles such as humanitarian aid workers, development officers, and program coordinators, which involve working with NGOs, international organizations, or government agencies. These jobs typically require strong communication, cultural sensitivity, and sometimes language skills, with fieldwork often involving travel to affected regions. Certifications in emergency response or project management can enhance job prospects in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Humanitarian Internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Humanitarian Internship, you typically need a background in international relations, social sciences, or a related field, along with strong research and analytical skills. Familiarity with data collection tools, project management software, and sometimes proficiency in languages such as French or Arabic is often required. Adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and strong communication skills help interns effectively collaborate with diverse teams and communities. These abilities are crucial for navigating complex environments and contributing meaningfully to humanitarian projects and missions.

Community Legal Aid & Affiliate Internships

Worcester, MA โ€ข On-site

$15 - $20/hr

Full-time, Part-time, Internship

Posted 16 days ago

Job description

Community Legal Aid (CLA) is the civil legal aid program serving the low-income and elderly residents of Central and Western Massachusetts. Through CLA's effective advocacy in more than 8,000 cases each year, some of the most vulnerable residents of the region obtain safe and stable housing; fight discrimination in the housing and employment arenas; access unemployment, disability and other benefits to stabilize their income; break free from domestic violence and other abuse and exploitation; and get needed services in school. In addition, CLA's wholly-owned subsidiary, the Central West Justice Center (CWJC), specializes in cases involving humanitarian-based immigration relief.

Community Legal Aid and Affiliate accept law students during the academic year (fall and spring semester) but primarily accept interns for our summer internship program. Academic year interns are expected to work a minimum of 10 hours per week, to be arranged according to their class schedule. Summer interns work full-time (35 hours a week) for 10 weeks and participate in weekly learning sessions that introduce the different types of legal aid work at the organization.

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES:

Law student interns apply to work in one of Community Legal Aid and Affiliate's substantive practice areas and will assist our attorneys in representing clients. Specific responsibilities vary by unit but may include:

  • Conducting client interviews and advising clients with appropriate supervision
  • Researching and drafting briefs and other legal documents
  • Assisting in preparing pleadings
  • Assisting in trial and/or hearing preparation
  • Attending community meetings, outreach events, and/or court and agency hearings with staff advocates

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled in an ABA-accredited Juris Doctor (JD) or Master of Law (LLM) program
  • Demonstrated experience or strong interest in public interest law

COMPENSATION:

We encourage students selected for internships with CLA to secure funding through law school public interest scholarships, work-study options, the Massachusetts Bar Foundation internship stipends, or other funding sources. We pay our summer interns if they cannot receive summer stipends/funding from their law schools. Part-time internship opportunities are unpaid but may fulfill academic or pro bono credit.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Candidates interested in an internship with CLA or CWJC should list which unit and office location they would prefer in their cover letter. For questions, please contact Recruitment Coordinator, Gertrude Addo at jobs@cla-ma.org.
