Humanitarian Internships information

What are humanitarian internships?

Humanitarian internships are temporary positions, usually lasting a few months, where students or recent graduates work with organizations focused on humanitarian aid and development. These internships provide hands-on experience in areas such as disaster relief, human rights, health, and education, often in international or multicultural settings. Interns may support project management, research, communication, or field operations, gaining valuable insight into the challenges and impact of humanitarian work. Such experiences can help interns build professional networks and develop skills relevant for a career in the humanitarian sector.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a humanitarian internship?

As a humanitarian intern, you'll typically support a variety of projects, such as organizing community outreach events, conducting research on local needs, assisting with program monitoring and evaluation, and helping coordinate logistics for aid distribution. Your daily tasks may include data entry, preparing reports, and collaborating with field teams or local partners. Interns often work closely with experienced professionals, giving you valuable exposure to both office-based and fieldwork in a dynamic, multicultural environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a humanitarian internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Humanitarian Internship, you typically need a background in international relations, social sciences, or a related field, along with strong research and analytical skills. Familiarity with data collection tools, project management software, and sometimes proficiency in languages such as French or Arabic is often required. Adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and strong communication skills help interns effectively collaborate with diverse teams and communities. These abilities are crucial for navigating complex environments and contributing meaningfully to humanitarian projects and missions.

Job description

Are you a person of compassion? An advocate for justice? Someone who stands up for the rights of the vulnerable and speaks out for the marginalized, the exploited and the forgotten?  Do you believe in our calling as Christians to welcome the least of these and love our neighbor?

If you answered ‘yes’, to any of the above, World Relief, and millions of people around the world need you.

At this pivotal moment in time, we are rapidly expanding and growing our team to meet the increasing needs of our world. We are looking for people who want to use their gifts and talents to make a real and tangible difference in our world and the lives of the suffering.

If you’re looking for a purpose-driven career in which you can grow your talents, while also standing up for the rights of the vulnerable, we want you to join us today.

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY:
World Relief is a global Christian humanitarian organization whose mission is to boldly engage the world’s greatest crises in partnership with the church. The organization was founded in the aftermath of World War II to respond to the urgent humanitarian needs of war-torn Europe. Since then, for 80 years, across 100 countries, World Relief has partnered with local churches and communities to build a world where families thrive and communities flourish.

Today, organizational programming focuses on humanitarian and disaster response, community strengthening and resilience, and refugee & immigrant services and advocacy.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Are you comfortable with technology, fluent in Dari and/or Pashto, and want to use your skills and abilities to impact Afghan women’s lives?
World Relief seeks a Tech Support Intern to join our team!  The Dari/Pashto-speaking Tech Support Intern provides technical assistance to adult refugee women with limited English, literacy levels, and technical skills so they can access virtual education. The intern provides basic digital literacy training and instructs female clients how to use phones, laptops, and Zoom. Ongoing technical support is provided through phone and video calls and driving to refugee clients’ homes as needed to troubleshoot tech problems. The intern also helps refugees connect to affordable internet service. This position requires fluency in Dari and/or Pashto, has a flexible schedule, and is ideal for interns with backgrounds in IT, Education, Social Work, or other majors. The intern must be available Tue, Wed, Thu 8:30 am-12:00 pm. This position is for 10 hours per week. This is a hybrid position, with 1 day in the office and 4 days working from home. The intern will become more familiar with the challenges faced by preliterate refugees, gain experience helping clients become digitally literate, and become aware of the importance of resources that assist preliterate refugees in accessing services. This is an unpaid internship; however, university credit may be available with prior approval.
While some internships are unpaid, the program is competitive and you are encouraged to approach it in the same way you would a job. Applicants are required to submit a cover letter, resume, application, and to pass a Criminal Background Check. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Please note that an internship with World Relief does not guarantee a future job in the organization.
