Job description

The Supervisor of Accounting Operations is responsible for leading the daily execution of operational accounting activities for a large single-family residential portfolio. This role oversees a team of accounting professionals responsible for resident receivables, general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, month-end close support, and operational accounting functions.

The Supervisor ensures accounting processes are executed accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with company policies while driving continuous process improvements and maintaining strong internal controls. This position partners closely with Accounts Payable, Property Operations, Asset Management, Treasury, and the Data team to support business initiatives and improve accounting operations.

This individual is expected to lead by example, develop staff, improve workflows, document processes, and help scale the department as the company continues to grow.

This is an office based/remote position based in our downtown Dallas Officeย  (a 4/1 hybrid work schedule may be available.


The Role:
ย ย  This position includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:

ย 

Team Leadership

  • Supervise the daily activities of the Accounting Operations team.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop accounting staff through regular feedback and training.
  • Review work for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
  • Assist with workload planning and resource allocation.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluations.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Operational Accounting

  • Oversee accounting for assigned property portfolios.
  • Review journal entries and general ledger activity.
  • Ensure transactions are recorded in accordance with GAAP and company policy.
  • Review and approve balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Monitor financial activity and investigate unusual variances.
  • Ensure accounting records remain accurate and complete.

Accounts Receivable Oversight

  • Oversee resident receivable accounting.
  • Review bad debt reserve calculations and resident write-offs.
  • Ensure security deposits, prepaid balances, and resident refunds are properly accounted for.
  • Monitor aging reports and assist with collection-related accounting issues.
  • Ensure resident ledger activity is properly reflected in the general ledger.

Month-End Close

  • Coordinate assigned month-end close activities.
  • Ensure close deadlines are met.
  • Review supporting schedules and reconciliations.
  • Assist with resolving accounting issues impacting financial reporting.
  • Work with Finance leadership to improve close efficiency.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to streamline accounting operations.
  • Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Recommend automation opportunities.
  • Participate in system implementations and process enhancements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives through automation, AI solutions, system enhancements, and process standardization.
  • Help strengthen internal controls and operational consistency.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Accounts Payable, Property Operations, Treasury, Asset Management, Data & Business Intelligence, and Finance Leadership.
  • Resolve accounting issues, support portfolio transitions, improve operational processes, and ensure accurate financial reporting.

Special Projects

  • Support acquisitions, dispositions, and portfolio onboarding.
  • Assist with new accounting initiatives.
  • Participate in system implementations and integrations.
  • Lead department projects assigned by leadership.
  • Assist with year-end activities and audits.
  • Projects and additional duties as requested

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience.
  • 2+ years of supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
  • Property management, real estate, or single-family rental experience preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of GAAP.
  • General ledger and balance sheet reconciliation experience.
  • Month-end close experience.
  • Accounts receivable accounting knowledge.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience with ERP systems (Ender & Yardi).
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
