Construction Controller

The current Office Manager/HR/Controller will be retiring. The new Controller / Accounting Manager will join the organization during an exciting period of growth and will have a unique opportunity to collaborate with leadership while further developing the company's financial processes, controls, and forecasting capabilities to support continued growth and profitability.

Reports To: Leadership Team
Location: South San Jose, CA

Candidate Profile

Seeking a current Controller and/or Accounting Manager with construction industry experience. The ideal candidate is a problem-solving, well-grounded, self-aware professional who fosters communication, embraces new ideas, is committed to continuous learning, and values relationship building.

Required Qualifications
  • Strong construction accounting experience, preferably with a General Contractor (GC).

  • Must have previous work experience in the San Francisco Bay Area.

  • Must currently reside in or near the San Jose area.

  • This is a full-time, in-office position located in San Jose, CA.

  • Must be available to work onsite five days per week.

  • No remote or hybrid work options are available.

  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented office environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field is preferred.

  • MBA and/or CPA designation is a plus but not required.

  • Thorough understanding of financial controls and accounting best practices.

  • Experience with legal matters, risk management, insurance, and banking relationships is highly desirable.

Controller Duties and ResponsibilitiesPayroll Accounting
  • Oversee and assist in all aspects of payroll accounting, including timecards, workers' compensation, 401(k), quarterly reporting, year-end reporting, and new-year payroll setup.

Accounts Payable
  • Oversee and assist in all aspects of accounts payable, including GCPay administration, accounts payable checks, lien releases, and 1099 filings.

Accounts Receivable
  • Oversee and perform all aspects of accounts receivable, including billing packages, tracking outstanding invoices, and bank deposits.

Banking
  • Perform all banking and investment functions, including daily and monthly reconciliations, transferring funds between accounts, and credit card management.

Financial Management
  • Perform all financial functions, including year-end closing, job costing, adjusting journal entries, and reviewing all accounts.

  • Work closely with the outside CPA firm to prepare, file, and pay taxes.

Insurance
  • Manage all insurance-related activities, including policy renewals, certificates of insurance (COIs), year-end audits, workers' compensation, general liability coverage, owner COIs, and subcontractor insurance compliance.
