Job description

The Dallas Morning News is looking for an Enterprise/Accountability Reporter to join our award-winning newsroom. 

This reporter will be integral to every major story we cover, swooping in to provide depth, accountability and memorable storytelling.
We're looking for a seasoned journalist with expertise in narrative writing, investigations, data journalism and the craft of writing. The ideal candidate will be overflowing with story ideas and capable of turning powerful stories in just a few days.

The range of stories will include profiles, narratives and enterprise stories that bring depth to the important subjects and people in our community. 

Having a strong knowledge and understanding of Texas history is a plus.

This reporter also must love collaborating with others and see multimedia storytelling on different platforms as the way to reach audiences.

The Dallas Morning News believes a collaborative and inclusive work environment is essential to a thriving workplace for all. We are in search of a diverse group of candidates. 

Responsibilities and duties:

  • Produce quick-turn enterprise and accountability stories on key issues and people in the community 

  • Work collaboratively in a deadline-driven newsroom environment

  • Write engagingly and accurately on North Texas 

  • Use social media as a tool to develop story ideas and respond to what our audience is already talking about

  • Build stories with links, tags, SEO best practices, attractive web headlines and multimedia when appropriate

  • Monitor analytics for your stories and work with editors to suggest approaches for improvement

  • Collaborate with Audience editors and our Photo team to improve the digital presentation of your stories

  • Work with editors to evolve and shape your coverage to deepen engagement with our digital audience 
     

Job requirements:

  • Applicants should have at least five years of related reporting experience

  • Valid driver's license and registered vehicle to travel to assignments.

Qualifications 

  • Demonstrated strong writing skills, with a track record of strong narrative writing, special projects

  • Aptitude for public records, financial documents and legal filings

  • Ability to self-manage and handle multiple projects at the same time

  • Good news judgment, accuracy, speed, grammatical precision, a flair for headlines, energy, curiosity and an eye toward digital success

  • Ability to use social media for newsgathering and audience development

  • Understanding of platforms and audiences and ability to compose stories appropriate to the platform of publication (e.g., voice, style, formatting, hyperlinks)

  • Collaborating effectively with team members and across newsroom departments

  • Familiarity with Texas

  • Fluency in Spanish is an advantage.

  • Bachelor's degree
