Summary of PurposeWe need individuals to provide direct support to our students who are entitled to accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Familiarity with disability services would be beneficial. Training will be provided. The ability to maintain confidentiality is imperative.
Note: Applications for Accommodation Assistants are received on a continuous basis. Hiring needs tend to correlate with semester enrollment.
Typical DutiesOur students need someone who can patiently assist them in achieving their goals. Since each student is unique, the specific requirements for each assignment can vary. Overall, however, these are the typical types of assignments:
- Accommodation Assistant: You would be responsible for assisting the student in a classroom setting. You would be the eyes, ears, hands, etc. of the student. Specific requirements vary by student and their abilities. You would be provided detailed information regarding the specific needs prior to accepting the assignment. The tasks you would be responsible for are similar to the actions performed by every student in the class, such as turning in homework, carrying lab equipment to the workstation, performing experiments, moving desks if the class is rearranging desks for group work, etc.
- Live Reader: You would be responsible for reading a student's test materials out loud to them.
- Scribe: You would be responsible for recording the student's answers.
- Notetaker: You would be responsible for taking notes during a class setting.
- Coach: This is a program where we assign specific students a coach/mentor to meet weekly. You would be responsible for meeting with your student and helping them be organized. You would assist in creating small goals, encourage the use of appropriate OCC services, etc. More training would be provided, but this is essentially a combination of study skills and organization.
- Remote Proctoring: With live synchronous classes that have proctored exams, you may be assigned to proctor virtually.
Minimum Education and ExperiencePay for this position is determined by the level of education completed. Be sure to include a copy of your transcripts for the highest level of education you have completed when you apply.
Pay Rates:$15.00 per hour with fewer than 62 college credit hours
$17.50 per hour with an Associate's Degree OR 62 or more credit hours
$21.15 per hour with a Bachelor's Degree or higher
This position is not associated with any OCC benefits except for MPSERS (Michigan Public School Employees' Retirement System) with ORS (the Michigan Office of Retirement Services).
