Employer & Industry UsageUsed by engineering firms, large corporations, and AV integratorsEmployed by event companies, venues, and service providers

Av Engineering involves designing and planning complex AV systems, requiring technical expertise and higher education. In contrast, AV Technicians focus on installing, maintaining, and operating AV equipment. Both roles are essential in the AV industry but differ in scope, responsibilities, and qualifications.

What is AV Engineering?

AV Engineering, or Audio Visual Engineering, is a field focused on the design, installation, and maintenance of systems that use audio and video technology for communication, presentations, and entertainment. AV engineers work with equipment like microphones, speakers, projectors, video walls, and control systems in environments such as conference rooms, auditoriums, and event venues. Their role ensures that audio and visual elements work together seamlessly to deliver clear, reliable experiences for users. AV engineers may also troubleshoot technical issues, integrate new technologies, and provide user training.

What are some common challenges faced by AV Engineering professionals when integrating new technologies into existing systems?

AV Engineering professionals often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues between new equipment and legacy systems, managing network bandwidth for audio and video signals, and ensuring seamless user experiences for end users. They must also coordinate closely with IT teams, architects, and stakeholders to meet project requirements and timelines. Staying updated on rapidly-evolving AV standards and troubleshooting technical glitches are key aspects of the role, making adaptability and strong communication skills essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AV Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AV Engineer, you need strong knowledge of audio-visual systems, signal flow, and integration, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with AV control systems (like Crestron or Extron), DSP programming, and certifications such as CTS (Certified Technology Specialist) are typically required. Excellent troubleshooting ability, clear communication, and teamwork are essential soft skills for coordinating with clients and other technical staff. These competencies are crucial for ensuring reliable AV system performance, client satisfaction, and smooth project execution.

The ideal candidate loves AV and works with minimal direction. We're a company of AV engineering and project management geeks that like to work with other problem solvers. Our goal for this specific person is to advance them to either an AV Engineering or Project Management role in 2-5 years.

As an AV Lead Technician for VIBE Design, you will perform general AV tech functions, while leading, training, and mentoring newer technicians. You will troubleshoot and commission AV systems, perform basic network configuration, and load / adjust / configure DSP and Video processing systems.

Every company has pros and cons. VIBE Design is a small company handling relatively large and complex AV projects. This means we have zero bureaucracy or office politics, but also lack rigidly structured systems. If you're looking for a job where your every function is mechanically spelled out, look elsewhere. Our team members are actively involved with a constant eye on improving our workflows and processes.

  • Manage a team on large and complex AV projects up to 4 months (longer projects utilize a PM)
    • Assist with planning staff requirements
    • Maintain detailed client communication over email
    • Take responsibility for and meet milestones and deadlines
  • Test and troubleshoot large and complex AV systems
    • Test with multimeter, Fluke Network Analyzer, TDR, OTDR, impedance meter, and video analyzer
    • Perform basic network testing: Wireshark, ping, confirm VLANs. Update IP/DHCP/DNS settings
    • Commission, test, and take responsibility for systems up to $150k (larger by Engineers)
    • Conduct user training and create quick start documentation
  • Work with Audio DSPs, Control Systems, Video processors, and other AV devices
    • Follow signal flow and troubleshoot DSP and Video Processor programming
    • Program simple DSP and Video processing systems.
    • Test control systems and upload code revisions
    • Perform system discovery. Troubleshoot networking and IP configuration issues.
  • Plan and oversee rigging of objects up to 300 lbs

Our goal for this specific person is to advance them to either an AV Project Management or Engineering role within 2-5 years, so you will be trained in the following areas if you don't already have previous experience:

  • Design and Engineer Sound Systems and large scale AV systems
    • Use sound system modeling / prediction tools and measure performance with Smaart
    • Design projection systems, videowalls, and LED walls and perform final image calibration
    • Design conferencing systems based on with Crestron / Extron / Biamp / QSYS / etc
    • Provide calculations, sketch, and review shop drawings in Bluebeam Revu. Oversee CAD drafting.

    • Maintain detailed client communication over email and answer RFIs
    • Take responsibility for and meet milestones, deadlines, and profit margin goals

ABOUT YOU

You're looking for opportunity, because you're willing to work for it. You love the AV industry. You want an environment of rapid growth and mentoring to progress your career to the next level because you're extremely driven. You want to be involved in large, complex, and cool projects without all of the wasteful bureaucracy headache of working for of a large company.

You're a well-organized self-starter, who likes to jump in and get things done. You can follow a process to make sure things are done properly, but hate paperwork and checklists that waste everyone's time, so you're always looking for a better way to do things... even though people don't always listen.
