Employer & Industry UsageUsed by engineering firms, large corporations, and AV integratorsEmployed by event companies, venues, and service providers

Av Engineering involves designing and planning complex AV systems, requiring technical expertise and higher education. In contrast, AV Technicians focus on installing, maintaining, and operating AV equipment. Both roles are essential in the AV industry but differ in scope, responsibilities, and qualifications.

What is AV Engineering?

AV Engineering, or Audio Visual Engineering, is a field focused on the design, installation, and maintenance of systems that use audio and video technology for communication, presentations, and entertainment. AV engineers work with equipment like microphones, speakers, projectors, video walls, and control systems in environments such as conference rooms, auditoriums, and event venues. Their role ensures that audio and visual elements work together seamlessly to deliver clear, reliable experiences for users. AV engineers may also troubleshoot technical issues, integrate new technologies, and provide user training.

What are some common challenges faced by AV Engineering professionals when integrating new technologies into existing systems?

AV Engineering professionals often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues between new equipment and legacy systems, managing network bandwidth for audio and video signals, and ensuring seamless user experiences for end users. They must also coordinate closely with IT teams, architects, and stakeholders to meet project requirements and timelines. Staying updated on rapidly-evolving AV standards and troubleshooting technical glitches are key aspects of the role, making adaptability and strong communication skills essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AV Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AV Engineer, you need strong knowledge of audio-visual systems, signal flow, and integration, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with AV control systems (like Crestron or Extron), DSP programming, and certifications such as CTS (Certified Technology Specialist) are typically required. Excellent troubleshooting ability, clear communication, and teamwork are essential soft skills for coordinating with clients and other technical staff. These competencies are crucial for ensuring reliable AV system performance, client satisfaction, and smooth project execution.

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled AV AutoCAD Engineer (Sales Support) to work onsite at our Los Angeles office. This is not a remote role—it’s a highly collaborative, walk-in-style engineering position that bridges the gap between sales and technical execution. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in AV systems design and documentation, and be fluent in tools such as AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Revit. This person will provide technical engineering support for proposals and drawings, ensuring rapid, accurate, and professional results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate conceptual AV system designs into detailed AutoCAD and/or Revit drawings.
  • Support the sales team by providing quick-turn engineering solutions, renderings, and rack layouts for proposals and bids.
  • Collaborate with project managers, technicians, and global engineering resources to ensure feasibility and clarity in designs.
  • Act as a technical resource in the office, available for in-person collaboration and walk-in requests.
  • Review architectural plans and client requirements to design high-performance, luxury-grade residential AV systems.
  • Participate in standardization efforts for engineering processes and documentation.

Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of experience in AV engineering, preferably in the residential or luxury integration market.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD; experience with Bluebeam and Revit is highly preferred.
  • Background in AV technology, with understanding of components such as AV distribution, lighting control, home automation, and networking.
  • Experience translating sales concepts into technical documentation.
  • Comfortable working onsite, full-time in the LA office (not remote).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to learn, adapt, and grow within a fast-paced and design-forward environment.
  • Relocation support available for the right candidate.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary: $75,000 to $110,000 depending on experience
  • Full suite of health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • Simple IRA with company match
  • Temporary housing assistance available for relocation transition
  • Opportunities for growth within a global, high-profile integration firm
