As of Jul 3, 2026, the average yearly pay for 1d simulation engineer in the United States is $123,399.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $92,000.00 and $146,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are 1D Simulation Engineers?

1D Simulation Engineers are professionals who use one-dimensional (1D) simulation tools to model and analyze the behavior of complex systems, such as automotive engines, hydraulic circuits, or thermal management systems. They focus on simulating the performance of these systems using mathematical models, often to predict behavior, optimize designs, or solve engineering problems before physical prototypes are built. Their work helps reduce development costs, improve efficiency, and accelerate product development cycles. 1D Simulation Engineers typically work closely with design, testing, and other engineering teams.

How does a 1D Simulation Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

As a 1D Simulation Engineer, you will frequently work alongside design, testing, and product development teams to ensure that simulation models align with project requirements and real-world data. Collaboration often involves sharing simulation results, validating models with physical test data, and iteratively refining system behavior based on feedback from other engineering disciplines. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical findings into actionable insights for non-simulation stakeholders are crucial for project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 1D Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 1D Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering fundamentals, physics, and mathematics, typically supported by a degree in mechanical, automotive, or aerospace engineering. Proficiency with 1D simulation tools such as GT-SUITE, AMESim, or Simulink, along with experience in data analysis and modeling, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and collaborative communication skills help distinguish top performers in this field. These skills are crucial for accurately modeling complex systems, optimizing designs, and ensuring effective teamwork in multidisciplinary engineering projects.

What is the difference between 1D Simulation Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

Aspect1D Simulation EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related fields; proficiency in simulation softwareBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering; CAD and design software skills
Work EnvironmentEngineering teams, R&D labs, simulation centersDesign offices, manufacturing facilities, R&D labs
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, energy sectors focusing on system-level simulationsProduct development, machinery, consumer electronics

The main difference is that a 1D Simulation Engineer specializes in creating and analyzing system-level simulations using specialized software, focusing on fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and system behavior. In contrast, a Mechanical Design Engineer primarily focuses on designing physical components and assemblies. Both roles require engineering credentials, but their daily tasks and tools differ significantly.

With a focus on circular solutions and sustainability, ECMS is committed to helping our customers create a cleaner, more sustainable world. Protecting our elements of life is our purpose and this inspires us to ever-new solutions.
ECMS operates globally in 15 countries with approximately 20 production sites and over 4,000 employees.
As a Senior Engineer - Catalyst Kinetics Modeling, you will LEAD by..........
The Senior Engineer - Catalyst Kinetic Modeling is a critical part of the Global Modeling team, which develops in-house proprietary 1D simulation software, derive global catalyst reaction kinetics models, and conduct modeling and simulation for internal and external customers in the field of exhaust emissions control for a variety of catalytically reactive systems or components, including but not limited to DOC, CSF, SCR, AMOX, TWC, PN/PM filters.
In this role you will
  • Develop and refine kinetic models that incorporate reaction kinetics, mass transfer, and heat transfer fundamentals to guide catalyst screening, system design, and optimization for automotive aftertreatment systems to depict.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including testing, catalyst design, and application engineering, to utilize models in experiment design, validation, and performance optimization.
  • Develop and apply machine learning (ML) models to complement physics-based simulations and accelerate model-driven innovation.
  • Communicate insights and technical findings effectively to stakeholders, translating complex data into actionable recommendations.

Your elements for success......
  • MS plus 5-years, or PhD plus 3-years, in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline, with thesis or research focused on heterogeneous catalysis, reaction kinetics, or chemical reaction engineering required
      • Additional degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related quantitative discipline is a plus.
      • Recent PhD graduate with strong relevancy is encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in scientific programing and chemical reaction engineering required.
  • Proficiency in computational modeling, data analysis, coding, developing, and deploying ML (machine learning) models using computer language such as Python, C, C++, C# required.
  • Prior experience using MATLAB/Simulink, AVL Boost/CruiseM, or GT-Suite commercial software is a plus.
