Where do portfolio managers work?

A portfolio manager may work in a variety of areas. Hedge funds, which typically invest on behalf of high-earners or institutional investors, require managers to deal with different clients. Pension funds, such as for municipal workers, employ managers to develop investment strategies to pay for worker retirement. Insurance companies and large mutual funds use portfolio managers to help them offset risk through investments. The primary responsibilities of a portfolio manager are similar to a financial research analyst, as they determine the amount of risk to which a client is willing to be exposed.
