Where do historians work?

Historians are employed by many types of organizations. A large majority pursue a career in education and become professors at colleges or universities. In academia, historians spend about half of their time conducting research and the other half working with students to educate them on historical facts and events. Other historians, referred to as public historians, are employed in non-academic workplaces, such as museums, archives, libraries, or planning departments. Research still makes up a larger part of their work, as well as collecting historical documents and artifacts. Public historians often work with the community and may serve as administrators of historical societies.
