Surgical assistants use needles, catheters, intravenous (IV) tubes, and bandages to assist with completing a medical procedure. During surgery, surgical assistants pass scalpels, clamps, scissors, needle holders, retractors or forceps to the doctor. Surgical assistants may be responsible for using digital tools as well, employing electronic medical records or scheduling software to relay information to the surgeon or verify the parameters of the patient’s surgery.
