What software do digital artists use?

Career: Digital Artist

There are many different software programs used by digital artists. These can change with your specialization, but the most common are within the Adobe Creative Cloud. You can use Adobe InDesign for laying out print projects such as brochures, ebooks, posters, and magazines. Photoshop is one of the leading photo-editing programs, which can be used to touch up your art. However, the most important program for 2D art is Adobe Illustrator. This is where you actually sketch and draw your pieces. If you work in animation, Harmony and Maya, which are not part of the Adobe Creative Cloud, are used for 2D and 3D animation respectively. Just as your responsibilities change with the industry, so does the software needed.
