Remote data scientists are highly educated. Most have a master’s degree and many have a doctorate. Because data science is an interdisciplinary field, data scientists come from a number of different backgrounds. The most common degrees are statistics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Remote data scientists must also be familiar with SAS and R programming languages for data analysis. Other technical skills include familiarity with at least some of the following: Python, Perl, Java, Hadoop platform, C+/C++, and SQL database coding. Remote data scientists should also be comfortable working with unstructured data from sources like social media. The most successful remote data scientists are business-minded, curious, and have excellent communication skills.
