What is the difference between restoration and conservation?

Restoration and conservation both focus on preserving historic places, products, or objects. These two fields of work may overlap in some instances. Restoration involves returning a building or object to its previous condition. You may add new elements that look like the original elements but are not the original elements. Restoration may also involve cleaning or making such additions. Conservation, however, focuses on preserving a place or an object in its current condition. Conservation work often focuses on items that are structurally sound and may not need to undergo structural repair. Some projects may require both conservation and renovation.
