A utility technician monitors and regulates the output of energy for a utility company. Job duties include preventing power surges; ensuring that the right amount of energy is distributed; operating power-generating equipment; measuring power flow with gauges, meters, and charts; and maintaining generators, turbines, and other equipment. The qualifications for a utility technician include an associate or bachelor’s degree in power utility technology and experience operating and maintaining machinery. Important skills for this career include critical thinking and the ability to work independently or on a team.
