What is a public defender?

A public defender is a criminal attorney who works in either state or federal court to represent defendants who are indigent or do not otherwise have legal representation. Public defenders are usually appointed by the court. The duties of a public defender include gathering information to support the legal defense, interviewing the defendant, and arranging the bail of a defendant. Public defenders also research case law, contact witnesses and review legal aid expenditures.
