To become a medical lab technician, candidates must have a medical laboratory certification. This shows they have demonstrated the ability and knowledge needed to work in a lab setting. The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) offers technician certifications for laboratory professionals, as well as professional certifications in categories such as pathologist's assistants and technologists. The medical laboratory certification requires candidates have an associate degree that includes coursework in chemistry and biology, a bachelor’s degree, or a minimum of 60 postsecondary education credits.
