A graduate gemologist has completed a graduate program in this field and has significant experience and practical skills that prepare them for working in the jewelry business and gem world. Through the graduate program, you learn how to fulfill both technical and practical job duties, like using equipment to evaluate and grade different gems by color, weight, clarity, and cut and identifying stones that are synthetic or imitations. As a graduate gemologist, your possible career paths include appraiser, diamond buyer, jewelry business owner, sales associate, and, of course, gemologist. The qualifications for these jobs include gem grading skills, strong attention to detail, excellent vision, and knowledge of the specialized equipment gemologists use, such as microscopes and magnifying glasses.
