What is a cytogenetic technologist?

A cytogenetic technologist is a clinical biology lab specialist. They prepare, inspect, and analyze chromosomes found in biological samples such as blood, bone marrow, or amniotic fluid. Using assessment tools, cytogenetic technologists determine if there are medical problems or abnormal chromosomes in the samples and discover patients’ congenital disabilities and hematological disorders. As a cytogenetic technologist, your responsibilities and duties include all facets of laboratory research and upkeep, such as preparing slides, performing computer image analyses, making and harvesting cultures, and performing microscopic and photo-microscopic studies. You perform data analysis and keep accurate logs or databases of your results and findings, and also communicate test results with doctors, patients, and other specialists.
