A bobtail truck refers to a semi-truck that does not have a trailer attached to it, usually when the driver is first dispatched to pick up a load. It is also a term used for a straight truck transporting a propane tank. In both cases, bobtail drivers safely operate the vehicle and complete routes promptly. As a bobtail driver, your job duties are to maintain your truck to keep it in good condition, follow safety protocols, and stick to your schedule. To become a bobtail driver, you need a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), good driving skills, and a clean background check. Some employers also have age requirements for career bobtail drivers.
