What is a beverage server?

A beverage server mixes and serves drinks at a restaurant, bar, or other culinary business. They may be a bartender, a bar back, or a member of the wait staff. Job duties include taking drink orders, preparing drinks, serving drinks at the bar or to customers in the dining room, and checking customer identification to verify ages. They may also have to serve food to customers. There are no formal qualifications for a career as a beverage server other than customer service skills, but there are classes and training programs available. Some states may require beverage servers that have duties as bartenders to become certified.
