What is Title IX?

Title IX is a federal civil rights law that prohibits the discrimination of any person by an employer or educational institution based on their sex. Title IX is part of a larger group of federal civil rights laws that set out employment rules and other regulations to protect rights for people at institutions that receive federal aid. Title IX has a significant bearing on higher education, and one of the most notable examples is the rebalancing of men’s and women’s sports at the collegiate level. Specifically, school athletic departments must provide equal opportunity to men and women to play sports. Title IX also regulates numerous other institutional behaviors at universities and federal programs.
