What is scientific diving?

Scientific diving is used to collect samples and study the underwater environment. Scuba equipment and other diving tools are used in the research process. A dive might consist of taking visual measurements and photographs, gathering physical samples, counting living organisms, and placing scientific equipment for further data collection. Scientists then analyze the research and use it to further studies and experiments and to provide educational material. The entire dive is done purely for scientific reasons and is exempt from commercial diving standards per OSHA. The American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) creates the training standards required for scientific divers.
