Botany is the scientific study of plants. However, this may also include bacteria, algae and fungi, as well as mosses, lichens, ferns, flowering plants, and conifers. Scientists today classify bacteria, algae, and fungi to be their separate kingdoms, yet college and universities provide coursework that covers all of these groups under the study of botany. Scientists who study plants in this broad definition are all considered “botanists” even if they specialize in a sub-group.
