What does a weekend hospitalist do?

Hospitalists are physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants who oversee patient care for those admitted into the hospital. Weekend hospitalists work part-time at a hospital, with their shifts typically covering Saturdays and Sundays. In this role, you assess the patients’ symptoms, review their medical records, and determine a course of treatment. You may also be required to perform routine procedures or basic surgical procedures. Some weekend hospitalists conduct research or lead educational programs for health care organizations. You may be on staff and work at just one hospital, or you may work with multiple hospitals, rotating weekend shifts among the different facilities.
