What do theoretical physicists do?

Theoretical physicists attempt to understand the laws governing nature. Unlike practical or applied physicists, they do not conduct experiments or observe nature directly. Instead, they spend much of their time in the lab or classroom, using mathematics to develop and refine physics theories. Theoretical physicists also publish their work and often collaborate with colleagues.
