What are firefighter requirements?

Career: Firefighter

There are no formal education requirements to become a Firefighter, but you do need to complete a series of training courses to become eligible to apply. Professional Firefighters go through several months of physical and classroom training, and they must learn basic medical procedures, such as CPR. Some also train to become a paramedic. Candidates must be able to handle heavy and complicated equipment such as oxygen tanks, the jaws-of-life, hydrants, nozzles, and hoses. Firefighters will often serve as a “trainee” for months with a team of experienced Firefighters to see a variety of firefighting and emergency scenarios before they are considered ready for the job. Even after certification, Firefighters are required to attend regular training and maintain their certifications. Most importantly, a Firefighter must be in good physical condition and be able to carry seventy pounds to serve in most firefighting roles.
