What is a state guard?

State Guards are military reserve forces organized by individual U.S. states, separate from the National Guard and federal military. They are typically composed of volunteers who provide support during emergencies, natural disasters, and other state-level missions. State Guards operate under the authority of state governments and cannot be federalized or deployed outside their home state. Their roles often include disaster response, search and rescue, and assisting law enforcement when needed.
