What is a sachem?

Sachems are leaders or chiefs among some Native American tribes, particularly those in the Northeastern United States, such as the Algonquian-speaking peoples. Traditionally, a sachem held significant authority within their tribe, making important decisions, representing the group in councils, and guiding the community in matters of diplomacy, war, and daily life. The role was often hereditary, but selection could also involve recognition of wisdom, leadership, and service. Sachems played a key role in maintaining the cultural and social structure of their communities.
