What is a PRN PACU RN?

A PRN PACU RN is a Registered Nurse who works on an as-needed basis ('pro re nata') in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). Their main responsibility is to monitor and care for patients as they recover from anesthesia following surgery. PRN nurses do not have a set schedule, providing flexibility for both the nurse and the healthcare facility. PACU RNs assess vital signs, manage pain, watch for post-surgical complications, and provide patient and family education about recovery. This role requires strong assessment skills and the ability to respond quickly to changes in patients’ conditions.
