What are platelets?

Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are small, colorless cell fragments in the blood whose main function is to help with clotting. When a blood vessel is injured, platelets gather at the site, stick together, and form a plug to help stop bleeding. They also release chemicals that aid in the clotting process and help repair damaged blood vessels. Platelets are produced in the bone marrow and circulate in the bloodstream for about 7-10 days before being removed by the spleen. Maintaining an adequate platelet count is essential for proper blood clotting and overall health.
