What is a Kami?

Kami are spirits, phenomena, or 'holy powers' revered in the Shinto religion of Japan. They can be elements of the landscape, forces of nature, as well as beings and the qualities that these beings express. Kami may include ancestors, natural objects like mountains and rivers, or mythological figures. They are not gods in the Western sense, but are instead spiritual presences that inhabit all things, and are honored through rituals and festivals in Shinto shrines.
