What is the Immaculate Conception?

The Immaculate Conception is a doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church which states that the Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin. This belief holds that from the very first moment of her existence, Mary was preserved by God's grace and remained free from the stain of sin. It is not to be confused with the conception of Jesus, but rather refers specifically to Mary's own conception in her mother Anne's womb. The feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated on December 8th each year.
