The qualifications for therapeutic riding work vary for each position. Equine therapy professionals need a postsecondary degree with a specialization in animal or health sciences. As a riding instructor or aide, you need riding instructor certification, which you can obtain through the American Riding Instructor’s Association (ARIA). Program director and manager positions require a bachelor’s degree in management or a field related to equine therapy. You need excellent communication and people skills in order to help each client learn how to ride a horse and perform tasks in a barn despite their disability or illness.
