How to become an English tutor?

Many English tutors have an associate or bachelor's degree in English, education, or a related field. While a degree may not be required, tutoring agencies and parents typically prefer candidates with a degree and some background in teaching. Additional career qualifications include experience working with children and strong communication skills. Those who have no experience in the classroom may gain experience by volunteering with afterschool enrichment programs or another organization that works with students. English tutors working with ESL (English as a Second Language) students are usually bilingual. Professional certification is not required, but is available through agencies such as the National Tutoring Association.
