To become a transportation planner, you need at least a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, urban planning, or transportation planning. However, most employers prefer those with a master’s degree. This career also requires relevant work experience in architecture, public administration, or public policy. Additional qualifications include strong communication, project management, and research skills. As a transportation planner, you must be familiar with all industry computer software, including TransCAD, CUBE/TP+, and ESRI ArcGIS. Many employers require professional licensure and certification.
