To become a track hoe operator, you should have a high school diploma or a GED certificate. In addition to these educational qualifications, you should have technical knowledge and training, including several years of experience working as a laborer on construction sites, where you learn how to safely operate heavy machinery. To operate most track hoes and other excavators, you also need a valid driver’s license, and some states require you to have a CDL. Other important skills include a strong eye for detail and the ability to carry out all safety requirements on site.
