Typically, a toxicologist needs a bachelor’s degree in clinical chemistry, pharmacology, chemistry, or some other scientific field in order to get entry-level work. Most toxicologists pursue a doctoral degree, which opens up many more career opportunities. After multiple years of experience, toxicologists can be certified through the American Board of Clinical Chemistry, the American Board of Forensic Toxicology, and the American Board of Toxicology.
