How to become a ship captain?

Qualifications to become a ship captain include a high school diploma or GED certificate and a captain’s license. If you have relevant experience as a deckhand or officer, this may substitute for educational requirements, but most employers expect you to take the proper training before starting your captain duties. There are opportunities to earn advanced degrees in marine science and engineering which give you more job options. You must have the availability to be away from home for long periods of time. Required skills include strong communication and customer service, and eye for detail when creating voyage logs, and a deep understanding of maritime laws and regulations including those mandated by the United States Coast Guard (USCG).
