The qualifications needed to become a reference librarian include a master’s degree in library science and a working knowledge of print and electronic reference tools. You are expected to complete training classes and any required state certification programs. You must have excellent communication, listening, and customer service skills, as you work with the general public on a regular basis. You should have a good understanding of technology and computers, especially as libraries continue to incorporate digital services. Some positions even require you to answer questions submitted virtually. You must be comfortable giving presentations to large groups and speaking on the phone, and you should also have a broad reading background and a passion for learning.
