As a request-for-proposal (RFP) writer, your responsibilities include writing project descriptions to encourage and solicit a potential bid. RFP writing and proposal writing are often confused but represent two different types of request documents. Many employers look for minimum qualifications that include a bachelor’s degree in a writing-heavy field, like communications, English, or journalism, as well as experience in technical writing. You also need experience using RFP templates that standardize your documents. Although writing skills are at the forefront of the job, external communication is also one of your duties, so communication skills are beneficial. Employers may also ask for a basic knowledge of the laws that apply to your field.
