Becoming a pump operator requires you have some formal qualifications and prior professional experience within the oil and gas industry. Many pump operators begin their career paths by attending a professional school, focusing on a trade applicable to the oil industry. From there, you can find entry-level positions within pumping facilities, on oil derricks, or in positions with duties and responsibilities otherwise pertaining to the physical infrastructure necessary to the extraction of petroleum.
