How to become a port captain?

Most port captain jobs require a bachelor’s degree from a maritime college or university and a US Coast Guard deck license. Many positions require a master level license, but you may be able to obtain this rank while employed. Through formal education and hands-on training, you should learn the complexities of the maritime industry, including port operations, laws and regulations, and shipping logistics. Port captain is not an entry-level position, so expect to work up to five years in the industry before advancing to this position.
