A mining engineer needs at least a bachelor’s degree in engineering, usually geological engineering. A few universities offer degrees specifically in mining engineering. Many mining engineers go on to earn a master’s or doctorate degree. It’s important to earn a license in your state of employment. Additional qualifications include experience with all relevant industry computer software and excellent analytical skills. A mining engineer must be able to closely follow all health and safety regulations. The career sometimes requires extensive travel as well as long periods of time spent underground in mines.
