How to become a fitter?

A career as a fitter requires several unique skills and qualifications. Most fitters have a high school diploma or have a GED certificate, and many go on to post-secondary training at a vocational school or community college. There, they learn to work with specialized mechanical tools, how to diagnose and repair faulty diesel equipment, and get hands-on job experience. Others may take up an apprenticeship and learn from more senior fitters. Fitters need to have strong mechanical dexterity, the ability to work independently, basic math and engineering skills, and excellent written and verbal communication.
