To become a community advocate, it’s helpful to have a variety of qualifications, including career experience and job skills. Although not a major requirement, a postsecondary degree may be preferred by employers. However, other employers may look for you to have relevant job experience in lieu of a degree. You must have a strong familiarity with the needs of a community and knowledge of their neighborhood’s history and political strategies. You must also have strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to excite the public about an issue, and contacts within political and bureaucratic structures.
