The qualifications to start your career as a clinical assistant include a high school diploma or GED certificate and a certificate or diploma in medical assisting from a community college or vocational school. Most clinical assisting programs take about one year to complete. You need experience with collecting, handling, and processing specimens. Your training includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, ethics, and medical computer programs. Other crucial skills include laboratory safety, lab equipment proficiency, and phlebotomy, which is the drawing of blood from patients.
